I’m on ep11 of I Can Hear You and developing a SERIOUS Lee Jung Suk problem. God dammit.

in your fic disentanglement, i’ve always felt conflicted about the relationship between pete and jin. on one hand, there’s evidence that pete has yellow fever; on the other, jin appears wonderfully self-possessed and they seem to respect and genuinely love each other a lot. Was this relationship something you’ve seen in real life, or just a dynamic better left unaddressed?

I, like you, feel really conflicted about the yellow fever thing.

On the one hand, I have definitely in my life met and almost dated guys who clearly had a raging case of yellow fever, who have a very distinct and fetishized image of what an Asian girl – it’s always an Asian girl, right, not ever an Asian woman – should be like: submissive, mild in the streets a freak in the sheets, etc etc. These are the guys who mounted a katana on the walls but have never taken any martial arts courses, they just watched a lot of fuckin’ anime and don’t distinguish between Japanese, Korean and Chinese people. They like the look of us, and the rest of it is a constructed reality.

That said, I also struggle with my own innate hostility at this because what’s the line between yellow fever and just having a type, the way normal people have a type? I like guys who are tall. I like guys who have dark hair. I like a certain type of face, and a certain type of humor and all of that is fed into with a certain type of background. I know that’s not exactly having strong perv feelings about the magic of orientalism, but it’s a type of romantic profiling isn’t it? Should I be mad at a guy who likes the way Asians look, if that’s not the only reason he is interested in me? I don’t think I would be. It would be like someone getting pissed at me for dating tall guys because I like the way tall guys look. I don’t know. All I know is I feel conflicted, and unqualified to pass judgment on anything other than my personal experiences.

That said, for Pete and Jin, I think that Pete does have a little yellow fever. The scene about his apartment was a purposeful mash up of all the dumbest stuff that I’ve seen in a man’s apartment/house/room. That said, there’s also a line in there about Pete’s genuine love of his Saikano manga because you don’t have to be Japanese to be allowed to love Saikano. At least I hope not because I love Saikano. Having a measure of yellow fever doesn’t mean that he doesn’t also genuinely love Jin for being terrifying and being able to make him feel safe and protected like the little spoon forever. For me, for Pete and Jin, they fell very genuinely in love; the other stuff around it probably was a lot of potentially awkward conversations for both of them, but I didn’t necessarily spend a lot of time parsing it out.

Snow snow snow snow snow – snow day! Yay!

Yes! Snow! And not so much snow that it created the frozen garbage mountains of 2013/2014!!!!

Here’s the truth: friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, “bonus” relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children…it’s possible to transcend the limits of your skin in a friendship…This kind of friendship is not a frivolous connection, a supplementary relationship to the ones we’re taught and told are primary – spouses, children, parents. It is love…Support, salvation, transformation, life: this is what women give to one another when they are true friends, soul friends

Hey, I’ve been reading your (freaking amazing) fics, and the American South shows up a lot, looking really lush and lovely. Just curious- is it a place you have good memories of? It’s winter in Canada, and now I want sun and fresh peaches. :)

I am a member of the sisterhood of GRITS (girls raised in the South) and I love it with a deep and dreamy longing for the break in a summer evening’s heat, sweet tea and walking around barefoot in lushly green grass. In my soul, I am always wearing a sundress.

Kim Woo Bin tries his best to watch “Pinocchio.” On the last day of the broadcast, he texted me, ‘It’s a shame that it’s over.’ Kim Woo Bin has been watching “Pinocchio” very diligently.
